It's that time again! We love honoring the kids in our Decatur pediatric dental practice who go the extra mile each month and work hard to keep their teeth clean and problem-free. So we're excited to honor September's excellent brushes and flossers!
How to Become a Smile of the Month Club Member
Building good habits with consistent brushing and flossing at home sets your child up for a lifetime of success in creating a healthy and beautiful smile. Parents can help by leading by example and modeling their own good habits for their kids. Regular visits to their pediatric dentist every six months for teeth cleanings and checkups will also protect their smiles, and as a bonus, induct them into the Smile of the Month Club with a cavity-free checkup!
Here are some tips for steps you can take at home to help your little one stay cavity-free:
- Encourage brushing two times daily. Supervise brushing until around age seven or eight. Consider an electric toothbrush to help your child with their technique and to remove the most plaque possible.
- Ensure they floss their teeth once a day using the proper techniques. Yes, you can get cavities between your teeth, and flossing prevents this.
- Limit snacking throughout the day on sugars or starchy foods. Instead, increase fruits and vegetables, which promote good oral health by neutralizing acids in the mouth.
- Encourage your child to drink water instead of sodas or juices during the day.
Make brushing fun for your little one with colorful toothpaste or their favorite characters on their toothbrush!
