What Age Is Best for Orthodontics?

Dr. Bret agrees with the American Dental Association that children should receive an orthodontic evaluation by age seven. Early orthodontics, also called interceptive orthodontics, can give your child the best opportunity for lifelong oral health and straight, symmetrical teeth. Dr. Bret can evaluate your child’s smile and recognize early signs of issues when they’re most treatable.

Every child is unique, so some children may need orthodontics early, while others may get orthodontic treatment between the ages of 10–14. Some children may not need orthodontic treatment, but Dr. Bret can easily determine this during a dental exam.

December’s Smile of the Month Club

Dr. Bret and our team at Jerger Pediatric Dentistry are pleased to announce this month’s Smile of the Month Club! We’re proud of these kids for maintaining excellent dental hygiene habits at home. These children have shown that daily brushing, flossing, and eating nutritious foods can help prevent tooth decay and keep their teeth beautiful and healthy.

How to Prevent Tooth Decay with Orthodontics

The best kind of dental exam is a cavity-free one. Parents can help kids by encouraging them to brush twice daily for at least two minutes and floss once daily. Perhaps you let your child choose their age-appropriate toothbrush with their favorite cartoon character or superhero? Some toothbrushes even have music that plays for the allotted two minutes, which makes oral hygiene more fun and engaging.

Another tip is to make sure your child drinks plenty of water. Staying hydrated and moisturizing their mouths helps flush away cavity-causing bacteria.

Eating a healthy, balanced diet is another must for healthy teeth and gums. Instead of snacking on sugary or starchy foods, choose nutrient-rich fruits, vegetables, and other healthy options.

These tips are helpful whether your child has braces, expanders, spacers, or clear aligners like Invisalign Teen. A healthy smile is a happy smile!
